TRS reiterates demand for Telangana state in Assembly

HYDERABAD: Telangana found its echo during the debate on the no-confidence motion in the Assembly on Monday as leaders cutting across party lines lambasted the Congress for dilly-dallying on the contentious issue and playing with the emotions of the four crore people of the region.

While Majlis MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi hit out at the Congress and alleged that the Centre's continuous indifference on the statehood issue was causing irreparable damage to the economy of the state, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu put the onus on the Centre and said his party had already made its stand clear on the issue.

Some of the MLAs who spoke said the time has come for the UPA government to take a decision on the Telangana issue and restore normalcy in the state. Akbaruddin said both the government and the private sectors have suffered a loss of Rs 30,000 crore in the last two years because of the ongoing agitation for a separate Telangana state.

"How long the Centre is going to procrastinate on the issue? The UPA government should bring the issue to a closure," he said.

He, however, asserted that his party is totally in favour of a unified Andhra Pradesh. He said because of the T agitation, Andhra Pradesh was losing heavily as several industries were shifting their base to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other states.

However, leader of opposition Naidu tried to play it safe by declaring that the ball is in the Centre's court. He said it was the central government's responsibility to find a lasting solution to the statehood issue.

"The Congress is solely responsible for the instability and uncertainty in the state. It is responsible to set things in order," Naidu said. Training guns on Congress, he alleged that "the party is talking in one voice when it is in power and in a different tone when in opposition."

Naidu said the Congress had promised to resolve the statehood issue after it appointed the Pranab Mukherjee committee.

"But it has failed to do anything in the last seven years. People of Telangana will punish the Congress in the 2014 elections," he warned.

TRS floor leader Etela Rajender said nothing less than a resolution for a separate T-state would satisfy them and criticised TDP for failing to keep its word on the statehood demand. He said his party would continue to fight for the separate state till the Centre grants it.
