Time to take the Telangana issue head on
Time to take the Telangana issue head on
It's a case of Hyderabad interrupted. The city that was till recently racing ahead to become a symbol of a rising India, has come to a standstill. With schools and colleges closed every other day, public transport disrupted and businesses badly affected, uncertainty has become a way of life, and the city's carefully built image is in danger of being destroyed. This uncertainty needs to end. Fast.
The Telangana issue clearly is a complex one, and does not brook an easy resolution. At the heart of the problem is the fact that Hyderabad lies bang in the centre of Telangana, yet it is the only home known to lakhs of settlers from the Andhra region. But if we set our minds to it, the impasse can be resolved. To urgently develop a road map that is acceptable to all, we at The Times of India are kick-starting an initiative called T Junction.
Over the next few weeks, we will ask the central government, political parties and, above all, our readers to debate the Telangana issue and discuss an acceptable way forward for all. We believe there are perfectly workable solutions out there - including a couple that we will propose.
